What lurks underneath the ice? What lurks underneath the ice?
Meet Blubbery Weddell seals, fish that live inside the ice, and otherworldly-looking invertebrates as marine biologist Michael Lang describes some of the challenges of diving in Antarctica. As the Smithsonian’s Scientific Diving Officer, Lang tests equipment and diving methods to ensure that all the scientists he trains are safe and able to work effectively underwater. In this video, Lang discusses the incredible biodiversity that exists under the ice in the frigid waters of Antarctica.

Before You Visit...   Before you visit…
Enjoy this humorous and fun introductory video before you visit - or simply to remember a favorite past Smithsonian visit. Ben Stiller highlights some of the Smithsonian’s treasures, from the world’s first airplane at the National Air and Space Museum to monkeys that look like lions at the National Zoo. He’ll even teach you a few fun facts along the way, for example, “Did you know…that no matter how nice you are to the museum guards, they will not let you touch the exhibits? Even if you’re super famous?”
