Research Sprint Highlights Uses of TraitBank for Ecological Investigations

EOL and the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) held a meeting at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) bringing together scientists and programmers to use data from EOL’s TraitBank and BHL. Teams worked to answer questions such as: What traits make species vulnerable to climate change? What are the conservation risks for all amphibians in Mexico? Read more on the EOL Blog. Thanks to the Richard Lounsbery Foundation for sponsoring the event. To participate in or sponsor future Research Sprints, contact cparr@eol.org.

Biodiversity Heritage Library Partners are Digging into Data

Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) partners, led by the Missouri Botanical Garden, were one of the recent Transatlantic Digging into Data Challenge 2013 winners. Working with groups in the U.S.A., Canada, and the U.K., this grant will integrate text mining methods, visualization, crowdsourcing and, social media into the BHL to provide a sematic search system. Relevant content will be shared with EOL.

Going Mobile: New Field Guide Tool Available for Mobile Download and a Spanish Language Interface

A new Field Guide tool is now available through a partnership with iNaturalist. The new tool allows users to make guides from EOL Collections, customize images and text, and offers support for mobile devices and better integration with species observations.

We are also pleased to announce that NaturaLista, supported by CONABIO, provides a Spanish interface to the field guides and the iNaturalist community.

We'll see you there!

Join us at BioBlitz 2014. This family event is a species inventory at Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, CA on March 28-29, 2014. EOL Collections, games, and field guides will be central to the BioBlitz and can be used to enhance any of your visits to Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Visit us at Booth 853 at the upcoming National Science Teachers Association Annual Conference on April 3-6, 2014 in Boston, Mass. Discover EOL's resources and tools for classroom learning and find out how teachers are using EOL with their students.
