In the latest episode of the National Museum of American History's YouTube series, "Founding Fragments," host Tory Altman talks with curator Larry Bird about the museum's collection of these unique artifacts. Check out the rest of the "Founding Fragments" video series to get up close and personal with historical treasures in the collection.

The world's fifth-largest honey exporter, Mexico, recently had a shipment rejected by Germany because of genetically modified organism (GMO) soybean pollen in the honey samples. Smithsonian researcher David Roubik and colleagues helped rural farmers in Mexico quantify the GMO. “Nobody else can do this kind of work in the ‘big field’ environment,” said Roubik. “With an economy based on subsistence agriculture associated with honey production, the social implications of this shift in the status of honey are likely to be contentious and have profound implications for beekeeping in general.”
