NEW PANDA CUB AT THE ZOO
Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo on Friday, August 23. The panda team heard the cub vocalize and glimpsed the cub for the first time briefly immediately after the birth. Mei Xiang picked the cub up immediately and began cradling and caring for it.

WHO AM I?
I was worn by a man who accomplished many "firsts" in his day. He was the first Latino to win his sport's greatest championship as a starter, first Latino to receive his sport's MVP award, and naturally the first Latino enshrined in his sport's Hall of Fame. More important, this person was also extremely dedicated to charity work in many Latin American countries and received the first Presidential Citizens Medal ever awarded as a result of his efforts.

DA VINCI'S "CODEX"
One of Italy’s greatest treasures, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Codex on the Flight of Birds,” will be exhibited at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. from September 13 until October 22. Created ca. 1505, it shows da Vinci’s interest in human flight by exploring bird flight and behavior and includes sketches of devices related to mechanical flight and that predate the invention of the airplane by centuries.

OLINGUITO (oh-lin-GHEE-toe) Observed in the wild, tucked away in museum collections, and even exhibited in zoos around the world ― this creature was a victim of mistaken identity for more than a century. Smithsonian scientists uncovered overlooked museum specimens of this remarkable animal, which took them on a journey from Chicago to South America to Washington, D.C.
