Join Irish archaeologist Steve Mandal and learn how to make the ink used to write ancient Egyptian texts, the Book of Kells, and the Declaration of Independence. Follow in the footsteps of those who first figured out how to produce this indelible (permanent) ink from oak galls--a discovery that catalyzed and documented the birth and growth of civilizations around the world.

Participants will:

  • hear the intriguing story of how these galls are formed,
  • learn why indelible ink was significant to the promotion and sharing of human knowledge, especially literature, science, art and music,
  • watch a demonstration of the ink preparing process and actively participate in each step, and
  • take home a quill and a personal writing sample using the ink.

For Ages 6 and Up.

Únete al arqueólogo irlandés Steve Mandal y aprende cómo hacer la tinta utilizada en la escritura de los antiguos textos egipcios, el Libro de Kells, y la Declaración de Independencia. Sigue los pasos de aquellos que encontraron primero cómo producir esta tinta indeleble (permanente) que proviene de los robles – un descubrimiento que catalizó y documentó el nacimiento y crecimiento de las civilizaciones alrededor del mundo.

Los participantes podrán:

  • Escuchar la intrigante historia de cómo estos robles se forman;

  • Aprende por qué la tinta indeleble fue significativa durante la promoción y diseminación del conocimiento humano, especialmente la literatura, ciencia, arte y música;

  • Ver una demostración del proceso de preparación de la inta y participar activamente en cada paso de elaboración;

  • Llevarse a casa una pluma y una muestra personal de escritura utilizando la tinta.
