FREE ticketed event

In late March 2015, Bruce Beehler, ornithologist, conservationist, and Research Associate in the Division of Birds at the National Museum of Natural History, set off on a solo four-month trek to track songbird migration and the northward progress of spring through America. Traveling via car, canoe, bike and on foot, Beehler followed woodland warblers and other Neotropical songbird species from the Texas coast, where the birds first arrive after their winter sojourns in South America and the Caribbean, through the Mississippi River’s drainage to its headwaters in Minnesota and onward to their nesting grounds in the north woods of Ontario, Canada.

In North on the Wing, Beehler describes this migration of songbirds across the country, and tells the stories of the people and institutions dedicated to studying and conserving the critical habitats and processes of spring songbird migration.

Join us to hear from Beehler about the wonders of spring migration, and the need to conserve, restore, and expand bird habitats to preserve them for future generations of both birds and humans. Before Beehler’s talk, Helen James, ornithologist and Curator in Charge of the Division of Birds at the National Museum of Natural History, will highlight the role of collections in studying the spring migration.

This program is presented as part of the Beyond the Exhibition: Objects of Wonder series, which offers opportunities to look more closely at some of the objects in the acclaimed Objects of Wonder exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History.

The Objects of Wonder exhibition is located on the second floor of the National Museum of Natural History. Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.
